Travis Stefonowicz has been selected as the department’s Assistant Chief. Stefonowicz has served the Fargo community as a sworn officer for 19 years and most recently oversaw the Training and Development Unit as Lieutenant. Stefonowicz was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2009 and lieutenant in 2016.

Chris Helmick has been selected as the department’s Captain of the Criminal Investigations Division. Helmick has served the Fargo community as a sworn officer for 19 years and most recently oversaw the Investigations Division as Interim Captain. Helmick was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2009 and lieutenant in 2016.

George Vinson has been selected as the Captain of the Professional Standards Division. Vinson has served the Fargo community as a sworn officer for 17 years and most recently oversaw the Professional Accountability Unit as a Lieutenant. Vinson was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2011 and lieutenant in 2016.

The picnic is an effort by the Fargo Police Department to bring the community, local law enforcement and other agencies together in a casual setting in order to educate our community about services available to them in our area.

Learn about the dangers of drunk driving and riding in a vehicle without a seat belt with the Deutscher Crash Car Display and Rollover Simulator. Free treats, courtesy of Cass Clay Creamery and Old Dutch Foods, are available while supplies last. Food for purchase will also available. Attendees may purchase a one time jump ticket or unlimited jump wrist band for the inflatable games.

Community-wide NARCAN® Training

Fargo Cass Public Health will host a community-wide NARCAN® training in September, in conjunction with National Recovery Month. The training is sponsored by the State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis grant through the North Dakota Department of Human Services Behavioral Health Division.

All law enforcement agencies and middle and high schools in Cass County already carry NARCAN®, a drug that reverses an opioid overdose and saves lives. Individuals who are concerned about their opioid use, or a family member or friend’s use, are encouraged to attend this free training. Attendees will receive a complimentary opioid overdose rescue kit, which contains two doses of NARCAN®.

The placement of NARCAN® throughout the community is part of a preventive local response to the opioid crisis. Those attending will receive training on how to administer NARCAN® and provide rescue breaths, which could potentially save someone’s life. Additional community-wide trainings will take place in the coming months at Fargo Cass Public Health.

According to the Cass County Coroner, there were nine deaths in 2015 due to opioid overdose in Cass County. In 2016, there were 31 deaths; in 2017, there were 17 deaths and in 2018, there have been five deaths to date. Fargo Cass Public Health recognizes the need for expanded awareness, education and access to naloxone (NARCAN®), due to the high number of opioid-related overdose deaths in the community and the nation.

As the first and only FDA-approved naloxone nasal spray, NARCAN® Nasal Spray provides a ready-to-use opioid overdose emergency treatment. NARCAN® Nasal Spray is not a substitute for emergency medical care, and repeat applications may be necessary. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately, and keep the patient under continued surveillance.

Police Officer Testing

The City of Fargo is currently recruiting for the position of Police Officer. Police Officers perform general policing functions intended to ensure the safety and security of lives and property within the City.

Activities include patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigative duties. Officers work under general supervision of a Sergeant and are assigned to a particular area of the City. Officers may be assigned to special activities or projects on an on-going or short-term basis (e.g., crime prevention, investigations, school resource officer, etc.). The work performed involves a considerable risk to personal safety for self and others and requires quick decision making when determining the appropriate action to take in a given situation. While much of this work is performed independently and without the immediate presence of a supervisor, incumbents are required to draw upon their extensive training and the department procedural guidelines, mandates, and laws governing an officer's response and conduct when determining the appropriate action to take in a particular situation. Officers are subject to call back at most times. Officers may respond to situations outside of Fargo and across state lines when called in for mutual aid.

This position requires sixty semester or ninety quarter credits of post-high school education at an accredited college, university, or technical school to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Applicants are required to pass pre-employment assessments and tests. A valid State of North Dakota peace officer license must be acquired upon hire or as determined by the department and a valid driver’s license is also required.

Applicants are subject to a background investigation, credit check, and a personal history questionnaire screening. Upon a conditional offer, the candidate will be required to complete a BCI background check, polygraph, psychological exam, pre-placement evaluation, and drug screening. The starting pay is $25.02/hour ($52,042/year) plus benefits. Current or former law enforcement officers may be eligible to start at $25.77 – $26.49/hour ($53,602 - $55,099/year) depending on experience, as well as have a shortened training program.

The Police Officer entrance exam testing will be held Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 8:00 am at the Fargo Public Safety Building located at 4630 15th Ave N, Fargo, ND.

Applicants are required to bring a completed Personal History Information packet with them to the entrance exam testing.
